A Kid and his Minolta SR-1s

minolta.jpg
Let's bring it back to old school, keep it real and teach the kids the basics. Ok, so maybe he’s just playing for the sake of playing but two important things are happening here, one, he's learning to be creative and expressive and two, it makes for a really cool photo.

It's True - I love coffee

coffee.jpg
That's right folks; you get two still-life photos from me in a row. Still heading up this Valentine art for Link's issue in a couple of weeks and this was another attempt at a possible cover.

I lit this one with one flash off to the left and a small amount of window light coming in from the right.

Solar

gre-5d8nl76o2kweh5972ry_original.jpg
There's a Valentine issue coming up and Link is working on putting a few stories together that center around couples who work together. This couple works together in a solar-energy business and thought it would be fun to get photographed with a solar panel. There wasn't much a background to work with so I thought I'd try using the sun to help illustrate the idea and to remove some of the background.

Guacamole

rosalinda_05.jpg
Here's a little tabletop food shot for you. Link is working on a dip spread for the upcoming Super Bowl issue. This one was done with natural light only, the bar was a nice shade of purplish-blue and the windows had a pale yellow curtain lining. I shot this at f2.8 and focused in the middle on the jalapeno.

Retro Fashion

retro_31.jpg
This shot came from a little retro-fashion show earlier in the week. I was shooting each person as they came out and onto the stage when I noticed this group standing in this holding area waiting for their turn. I casually walked over to the doorway kneeled down and rattled off about six shots.

Leatherheads

leatherheads.jpg
Here's the other possibility for a Leatherheads/Superbowl cover. I shot this at one of the local colleges. I used a 12mm 4.0 lens and one light to the side – exposing for the sky.

Side Note:

One of my boys spotted Mr. George Clooney in Greer yesterday scouting locations for his new movie. Greer is located in-between Spartanburg and Greenville.

Where's Clooney

football.jpg
George Clooney's new film "Leatherheads" is being filmed in Greenville South Carolina – so, Link will be doing a cover on it. Here is the first attempt at making this fun. Take a guy, dress him in football gear and put him in a theater throwing popcorn into his mouth through a helmet.

Two lights, one to his right side with a blue gel (for the movie glow) and one behind to help light the seats behind him.

I’m on my way out the door to do another one, look for it tomorrow.

A little ice

A little bit of ice mix with some dumbass driving and this is what you get. An airport-hotel shuttle SUV upside down on an exit ramp.

Heelys

rusty_hutchison_and_friends_01.jpg
This is why grown men should not skate using Heelys (although I’m trying to get a pair for my birthday).

Link's doing a series titled "Am I too old for this" – I was sent out to a local bike shop where the entire staff skates around on these. I asked them to step outside so I could a shot of them all coming down Main Street on the double-yellow line and that’s when this guy took a turn for the worse.

Legos

This kid gets excited during his turn at competing in the Lego competition. First (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a non-profit organization that helps to make math, science and technology fun for kids, held the Lego League Competition on Saturday January 13, 2007 at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson.

Off Road

I shot the 2007 South Carolina International Auto Show in Greenville. In addition to showing many of 2007's new cars and trucks, Toyota also held an off-road site for people to test drive the new FJ Cruiser and Tundra. This is the 2007 FJ Cruiser.

Sugar on my Tongue

sj_gambrell_03.jpg
This was an amusing assignment. This woman spent 10 days in Canada learning to prefect the art of using sugar as a hair removal, a treatment called Body Surgaring. The office was terribly dark so I decided to light her three quarters for some slight drama and get her to play with the sugar. It's a profile portrait for series we do called "Sweet Job" and I think it works well for the publication.

Glendale Mills #2

Here's another one from the Glendale Mills shoot yesterday.

Glendale Mills

glenedale.jpg
I had a shoot today with a high-school-history teacher in Spartanburg. We went down to the old Glendale Mills, built in 1830, closed in 1961 and burn down in 2004. None-the-less, it was a beautiful sight but bitter cold. I grabbed this shot as we were leaving and the sun was just starting to set.

Birthday Boy

Yup, it was E's third birthday on Saturday.

Kimbo and the Twins

kimbo_20070106.jpg
I grabbed this shot of my sister (with twins in the belly) in front of one of those kid's playhouse TV station walls. The stage lights coupled with my flash made for some very interesting – almost fashion-style shadows behind her. It was just luck that her hair, her clothing, the lighting and the wall, all seem to fit very well together.

Blue Sky and a Building

blue_sky_with_building.jpg
I like grabbing these upward sky-building shots. Some fun weather came through this afternoon and the sky along with some sun and a cool architectural building made for an interesting photo for me.

Child's Play

clayton_gaming_05.jpg
Here we go a fun story on the clever subject, "am I too old for this". Posing for this photo is one of Link's very own reporters, and gamer. The shot was done in our studio and then ran through a little Photoshop action for the cross-processing effect in color. Back to the story – a list went around the office with about 30 bullet point of things you might be too old to do, I must have been pen-pointed for a least seven of them. So I have a little kid left on the inside, I can live with that.

More on the Boxer

a_099.jpg
I was going through these boxer photos again and saw this one. I'm not sure how I missed it the first time but I really like the mood of it. It’s hard to go wrong with directional light when photographing what many perceive as a "mean" man.

Get Organized

idao_organize_cover_12.jpg

idao_organize_cover_15.jpg
This is work for a future cover. It comes from an "I'll do Anything Once" story on being organized. We shot it in the studio using old newspaper archiving boxes. A simple set up really, boxes and papers for the props, the organizer, the mess (meaning Ana behind the boxes) and my editor throwing paper in the air; along with two lights with umbrellas flooding the backdrop and two with softboxes lighting the subject evenly.

Mentor

sj_austin_09.jpg
This is a profile shot for a series we do call “Sweet Job”. I shot this at an elementary school in Simpsonville SC of a lady who in addition to teaching, mentors at-risk 11-13-year-old girls.

I've made a few updates to the Web site. Most of the images you've more than likely seen on this blog and a newemail address - ian@iancurcio.com.
